Definition

An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. A projector projects the computer’s desktop onto the board’s surface, where users control the computer using a pen, finger or other device.  Teachers create flipcharts -- which are a series of pages, much like a Powerpoint presentation.

The two major brands are Promethean (which we have) and Smart Technologies (who make Smartboards).

Note that flipcharts are brand-specific.  So when searching on the internet, you need to know if the flipcharts are designed for Promethean IWBs or Smartboards.

Exercises to try

NOVICE

1. Check to see if you have the ActivStudio software on your laptop. It looks like this:

If not, ask Bernie to install it for you.

NOTE: There is also Activprimary software (see icon below) on your laptops, which has been designed for primary use, HOWEVER we recommend you use Activstudio instead, as it has more functions available, and the information gained can be easily transferred to the Activprimary software.

2. Create a new account at http://prometheanlearning.com/uk/ and sign up to do the Activstudio Level 1 Foundation Skills Course. It is a great way to learn about all the functions of the Interactive Whiteboards we have at school.

3. Go through the tutorials and then take the assessments. You must get 100% to pass, but can resit the assessments as many times as you need.  NOTE: this may take you a while.  We don't want to turn you off, but this is really the best way to get to know the software.  Remember -- you have until the end of Term 3 to do these tasks.  So don't despair, but don't leave it too late.

4. Email us a copy of your Foundation Skills course certificate.

APPRENTICE

1. Complete Novice tasks.

2. Open Activstudio and click on the Resource Library. Check to see whether you have the resources installed: if you do, you will see a whole lot of examples under each category; if not, the categories will be blank. Ask Bernie to install the resources if you do not have them.

3. Open a flipchart from the Shared Resources Library. Share one with your class (you may need to book the lab to access an interactive whiteboard).

PRACTITIONER

1. Complete Novice and Apprentice tasks.

2. Open ActivStudio and click on the Resource Library. Check to see whether you have the resources installed: if you do, you will see a whole lot of examples under each category; if not, the categories will be blank. Ask Bernie to install the resources if you do not have them.

3. Create a flipchart using some resources in the Shared Resource Library.

4. Save it to Shared Flipcharts by clicking on Flipchart > Save To >Shared Flipcharts.

EXPERT

1. Complete all tasks above.

2. As an Expert, we presume you will have already indicated your interest in further Interactive Whiteboard training, and will have been approved for the Activstudio Advanced Skills course. Sign up for the course on http://prometheanlearning.com/uk/, go through the tutorials and complete the assessments.

3. The final task is to create a flipchart and upload it. We would like you to upload it to the Promethean Planet website and send us the link. Also add it to the Shared Resource Library at school.
